What Is An Ectopic Pregnancy?
This is a complication in which the fertilized egg develops outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. Implantation can also occur in the cervix, ovaries or abdomen.
This can cause a great deal of damage to tissues since the embryo requires a lot of blood supply. This is a medical emergency, which needs to be attended to right away. Some women can actually die from this if not treated.
Signs and Symptoms
The following symptoms may be indications:
*
vaginal bleeding
* pain in shoulder
* pain in abdomen
* weakness
* dizziness
The above symptoms are possible signs of this type of miscarriage, but not necessarily.
How Is This Diagnosed?
This can be difficult. The doctor will check the following:
*
hcg levels
* ultrasound - if a uterine pregnancy is confirmed, then an ectopic pregnancy is rare.
How Is This Treated?
This condition can be treated chemically or surgically.
In chemical treatment, a drug called methotrexate is used to dissolve the pregnancy without causing damage to the fallopian tubes or other organs.
Surgical treatment is chosen in pregnancies that are further along. Sometimes this will be done if the tube ruptures, if there is extensive damage to other tissues, or if the bleeding cannot be stopped.
