What Is It?
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that starts while pregnant. In this case, your body is not able to utilize sugar in your blood the way it should. This results in a higher level of sugar in the blood than normal.
How Common Is This Condition?
This affects between 1%-3% of all pregnant women. It's something that usually starts in the second trimester. Thankfully, it's something that usually goes away after the birth of the baby.
How Dangerous Is It?
Your baby may be more likely to have problems at birth. Common complicatioins in the baby would include: low blood sugar levels, high birth weight, or jaundice.
This condition can also adversely affect the mother. The risk of
preeclampsia
increases. Also, if the baby is abnormally large, delivery will be difficult, or a
c-section
may be required.
What Should I Do If I Have It?
You will need to follow a
strict diet
, and
exercise
regularly. Frequent blood tests will need to be done to monitor your blood sugar levels. Medication may also be required.
